Sierra Blair-Coyle: Professional Rock Climber

image

Summer is in full swing, which means pinner Sierra Blair-Coyle is spending most of her time exploring the outdoors. As a professional rock climber, she loves collecting sports photography, discovering workout ideas, and finding healthy recipes on Pinterest. Read on to hear about her summer plans and all the things that lure her into the outdoors.

Hi Sierra! First, can you tell us a little about yourself?

I am a 19 year old professional rock climber and a full-time college student at Arizona State University with a full-ride academic scholarship. I tried climbing when I was 8 years at a local mall and instantly fell in love. Since I began climbing I have had many incredible opportunities around the world, competing, attending photo shoots, and media events. Some of the highlights of my career have been being a US team member, deep water soloing (climbing above water) in Maui, and winning nationals twice as a junior. I love climbing and all of the doors that it has opened for me.

image

You spend a lot of time exploring rocks and everything nature has to offer. What do you love most about the outdoors?

In addition to climbing, I love to take adventures in nature. I love to wander and stumble upon amazing places and things, being outside is especially incredible when you are blazing a new trail.

Summer is a great time to be outdoors. Do you have any fun travel plans this year?

This summer I’m attending an IFSC World Cup in Toronto, 2 photo shoots in Colorado, and the opening of the Sender One Climbing Gym in California, all in the next month! After that I am hoping to head to Maui and Puerto Rico for deep water soloing (rock climbing over water), and take some day trips to Las Vegas and various towns in Arizona. I love traveling, especially when it is spur of the moment.

image

How do you use Pinterest in your day-to-day?

I use Pinterest for everything! I get a lot of ideas for hair, nails, and make-up off of Pinterest, I am always trying something new. I also like to find new places to travel and different foods to cook. In addition to all of that, I am also always looking for workout ideas. One of my favorite workouts courtesy of Pinterest it called the “5-4-3-2-1” workout. It is great cardio and a lot of fun.

image

As an athlete, you must know all the healthy food finds. Who are some of your favorite foodie pinners?

My favorite healthy food pinners are Chocolate-Covered Katie, Taralyn McNitt (Undressed Skeleton), and Vegan Yack Attack. They always have so many healthy, yet simple and creative recipes to choose from.

Thanks for the pinterview and sharing your story with us, Sierra! To see Sierra in action, check out this competition video and more videos on YouTube.

An Updated Pinterest for French Pinners

image

The history, the arts, the food and the fashion… French has been available as a language setting on Pinterest since last year, but language is just one important piece of culture. That’s why we’re launching a new localized version of Pinterest, created especially for people in France.

French pinners will see more local content in Search and category feeds, as well as links to more French domains and pins with descriptions in French. We hope today’s updates will help French pinners discover more relevant pins, and faster than ever before.

We’re so excited to offer a tailored experience for our French community and we definitely couldn’t have done it without help from native French pinners. To celebrate them, we’re kicking off Pin It Forward France, Epingler c’est partager, with Sara of Petit Poulou and Dorian Nieto, two of the first 300 French bloggers who will be sharing their Pinterest stories and pins over the next month. We hope you’ll find some great new people and boards to follow, no matter where you live. Merci beaucoup, Sara and Dorian!

Kicking Off Epingler c’est partager

image

Hello there! My name is Sara, and I live in Paris, France. I blog for an inspiration blog called Petit Poulou, and I’ve been pinning since December 2012. I discovered Pinterest around the same time I began my blog through an amazing pinner from Canada, Celina Bailey and understood instantly that I needed to be part of the frame. It provided me with exactly what I needed — a way to organize my ideas and get inspiration for my projects.

My blog is dedicated to handmade creations, kids crafts, and DIY projects. I’ve connected with fellow DIY-ers all over the world like Fanny and Marie-Laure. Sharing boards and exchanging new ideas has provided me with a visual and stunning way to create a link with others which overcomes the barrier of language. Thanks to Pinterest, we are able to share original DIY projects and are always amazed to see them voyage through the world. It’s extremely exciting to see our creations being repinned in Spain, Japan or Argentina, or by famous pinners and bloggers.

I’m looking forward to reaching new French members of the community through Epingler c’est partager. After being inspired by creators around the world, I can’t wait to discover a little bit more about French makers and what drives people around here. With more relevant French content in category feeds and a more tailored French search experience, I’ll be able to find new vibrant pictures, Kids’ DIY projects, and home inspiration specific to France.

For the next 30 days, 300 bloggers around France will be sharing boards and stories to express how Pinterest helps them organize things in a personal way. Pinterest has rounded up a mix of bloggers from lifestyle bloggers, to those with a culinary palette and a traveling itch, and more!

To kick things off, you can read “What Pinterest means to me” on my blog. Other creative pinners are also posting today, so find new pinners to follow in France and hear other rich stories of how people create and share collections.

My name is Dorian Nieto and I’m a blogger, a journalist, an author, and a photographer… all things that for me have one common point, cooking! Cooking is an all-consuming passion, to the point that nearly my whole life today revolves around it. I cook all day long, and when I want to relax a little I look at photos… of cooking of course! And for the past few months I find these photos on Pinterest!

I’ve become a pinner and every day I unearth new images that teach me things about the folks who captured them, and inspire me to discover more about those people. Above all, I share. For me, Pinterest is first and foremost a place for passionate people to share what they love.

Today the Pinterest team, who I had the good fortune of meeting, has come to France with the desire to share with us this idea that I particularly love: Épingler c’est partager!

This campaign in which I am participating will allow you to discover my universe, as well as many other universes, and will open you up to a whole world of things that you’ve probably never even imagined.

To go along with the campaign, I’ll tell you my story over on my blog, why I believe in Épingler c’est partager. What’s more, you’ll get to discover all these other bloggers who will also tell their Pinterest story and who will without a doubt spark in you a tremendous desire to become a pinner!

Owen Goss: Game Designer & Developer

image

While some dads are busy playing games of their own, Canadian pinner and dad Owen Goss is busy making games for his son. Read on to hear about his latest app Baby’s Musical Hands and how he incorporates different games to help his kids explore and create stories through play.

Hi Owen! First, can you tell us a little about yourself?

I started working in the video games industry almost 10 years ago. Five years ago I decided to set out on my own, as an independent game designer and developer, and formed my own company, Streaming Colour Studios. I’ve released seven games on to Apple’s App Store since then. I also recently co-founded a new company called Milkbag Games with a friend of mine, and we’re working on our first game. I love making games because games are a fascinating medium where technology and art intersect. I do all the game design, artwork, and programming for my games, so it stretches my mind in new ways every time.

Outside of making games, I also quilt, rock climb, cook, and love spending time with my family. I live, with my wife and two young kids, in a city called Guelph, Ontario, Canada, which is about an hour from Toronto.

image

Being in the video games industry, you must come across a lot of different games. What are some games you’re currently into?

As a game designer, I’m always playing games, so I usually have a long list of current favourites. Right now I’m playing a lot of indie games: Proteus, Starseed Pilgrim, Don’t Starve, Thomas Was Alone, SlamBots, Go Round, Spaceteam, and probably a lot more I’m forgetting. I try to pin a lot of my favourites to keep track of what I’m playing and enjoying.

We’re so impressed with your Baby’s Musical Hands app. Can you tell us about what inspired you to create it?

Baby’s Musical Hands was one of those things that came out of watching how my son played with things. When he was about 8 months old, he would watch me use the iPad and was completely fascinated by it. If he could reach it, he would try to touch it, and want to bang his hands all over it. I looked at a lot of the apps for young kids that were out there, but most of them required too much precise interaction for him. I wanted an app that didn’t have any buttons to distract him, that couldn’t get into a state that he couldn’t get out of, and that delighted him. I realized that since I make games, I could make something for him to play with. And so, Baby’s Musical Hands was born.

The app is designed to be incredibly simple. There are just 15 coloured rectangles for kids to touch. When they press one, it plays a musical note, and a ring of stars burst out of the point they touched on the screen. It makes full use of the multitouch screen technology so that they can touch the screen all over and still get visual and audio feedback. It’s so much fun watching babies play with it.

The funny thing is that I originally made it just for my son, and I never intended on releasing it publicly. But when I showed it to friends who had kids, they kept saying “can you send me a copy?” so I decided maybe it was something other parents would want too. It’s been an extremely rewarding app to have made. I get these amazing emails from parents telling me how much their kids love the app, and how happy it makes them. That’s the most wonderful thing to hear.

image

What are some games that you’d recommend for parents to play with their kids?

In general, look for games that allow your kids to explore within the game. The most interesting experiences you and your kids will have playing games are the ones where you’re creating the stories together through play. I’m not as keen on games that are too structured, as they don’t leave as much room for you to talk with your kids while you’re playing, and build the experience together.

As for specific games, my oldest is two and a half right now, so I can only speak to games for young children. He and I both love the Toca Boca games. Toca Train is one of his favourites (and mine too). He likes to tell me stories about why the people are getting on and off the train, or why he’s putting a pumpkin on the train. Toca Band is one of his other favourites, as it lets him play with music in a really simple, but deep way. I’m also a big fan of Sago Sago’s apps. Sago Mini Sound Box is one of my son’s favourites right now. He also likes the Stella & Sam apps a lot (we love the books too).

As a dad, what are some interesting ways you use Pinterest?

I recently started a new board to collect cool kids’ stuff I find online. So I’ve started pinning neat toys, furniture, and storage containers I see online that I’d like to keep track of for birthdays or holidays. I also love searching Pinterest to see what other things parents are pinning. There is some really great design being done out there for kids, and Pinterest is a great way to find it.

Thanks for the pinterview and sharing your story with us, Owen! To see more of Owen work, check out his Baby’s Musical Hands app on iTunes and Google Play.

Adrian Kulp: Author of Dad or Alive

image

Stay at home dad Adrian Kulp surely doesn’t have any shortage of stories when it comes to sharing adventures with his kids. From the truth behind terrible twos to finding parenting advice on Pinterest, he takes us behind the scenes to his world of being a dad and everything in between.

Hi Adrian! First, can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m currently a full-time stay-at-home dad for two toddlers, Ava and Charlie. Before doing this, I was an executive for both Adam Sandler and Chelsea Handler for almost ten years. Since leaving the entertainment industry, I’ve been blogging at Dad or Alive, as well as The Huffington Post. I recently wrote and published a comedic memoir through Penguin about my first year as a stay-at-home dad and it’s on sale now!

image

What’s your greatest confession as a stay-at home dad?

Hmmm… that it’s not easy? Being a stay at home dad is tougher than any job I’ve had thus far. These kids keep you on your toes! One confession is the truth behind terrible 2’s. Everyone always told me that the 2’s were so terrible, but I’m here to tell you that it’s the 3’s. The 3’s are where it’s at.

image

What are some of your favorite parenting advice that you’ve found on Pinterest?

Pinterest has given me a ton. I’ve gotten advice on getting my kids to sleep through the night, eat healthier and how to soothe aching gums from teething. I’ve learned how to get marker off my walls and make my own cleaning solutions. My next mission is to find ways to keep the kids busy this summer since school is out!

image

What are your plans for Father’s Day this weekend? Any advice for those planning something special for Dad?

I’m actually doing a reading and signing at a Barnes n’ Noble in my hometown for my first book Dad or Alive. I’m also going fishing with my dad, which should be a good time. Advice for those planning something for dad? Keep it simple! Sometimes it’s nice to just relax and enjoy family.

Thanks for the pinterview and taking us behind the scenes of parenthood, Adrian! To see more of Adrian’s work, check out his blog and boards on Pinterest.

How would you describe your style?

I’d like to say my style is a balanced mix of daring pattern play and classic Americana. Most of my friends would likely say I’m not so much “stylish” but “addicted to chambray”. (I’m freely admitting I have a denim addiction.)

image

Where do you find inspiration for your blog posts?

I’ve always tried to keep my blog as an honest depiction of my life. It started as my personal journal and - no matter how big it may get - it will remain a personal experience for my readers.
